Highlights of Wangaratta

Wangaratta is located at the junction of the Ovens and king rivers in Victoria's picturesque north-east. Just 2 and a half hours drive from Melbourne, 3 and a half hours drive from Geelong and 4 and a half hours drive south from Canberra through the scenic countryside of N.S.W. With a population of 25,000, the region is well serviced by rail, coach and air.

Wangaratta boasts the facilities of a capital city but with the unhurried hassle-free charm of the country. Spacious parks and gardens of Wangaratta are deservedly famous, offering good facilities for picnics, barbeques and gatherings, or as a resting place.

Seasons offer distinct differences and features. Enjoy beautiful scenery incorporating the Warby Ranges together with the broad vista of Mt Buffalo, Mt Feathertop and Mt Hotham from Warby Springs viewpoint. Magnificent rivers, waterfalls, bush walks, lookouts, rail trails and bike tracks are all available.

Eating houses serving local produce and wines for all tastes and budgets are located both in Wangaratta and its attractive close-by historic and tourist towns of Beechworth, Stanley, Yackandandah, Eldorado, Chiltern, Rutherglen, Corowa, Bright, Myrtleford, Milawa, Oxley, Thoona, Boorhaman and Whitfield in the King Valley.

History of Wangaratta

The region was opened up by the explorers Hume and Hovel in 1824, followed by Major Mitchell in 1836. The name Wangaratta is an Aboriginal word meaning "resting place of the comorant". It is also said to mean "the meeting of two rivers".

Historic features reflecting the gold rush era incorporating early Australian history and bush rangers - Ned Kelly, the Kelly Gang and Dan Morgan - can all be explored within a short drive of Wangaratta.
