SPECIAL

EverGraze Road Shows

During September and October, the DPI EverGraze Extension Team will be providing beef and sheep producers with the opportunity to hear about results and new practices developed from the EverGraze – More Livestock from Perennials project with a series of free field days in Gippsland, North East and South West Victoria.  Each field day will include an on-farm paddock walk and case study where leading producers are implementing new perennial pasture systems.  MLA More Beef from Pastures and AWI Making More from Sheep tools will be used to evaluate the cost/benefit of implementing the new systems.

Perennial pasture systems developed from EverGraze research Proof Sites at Hamilton, Wagga Wagga and Albury Wodonga will be evaluated at the Road Show. The Hamilton and Wagga Wagga Proof Sites have been running since 2004 and have demonstrated increased year-round feed supply and significant supplementary feeding reductions from adding summer active perennials including lucerne, tall fescue and chicory into the farm system.  At the new Albury Wodonga Proof Site, grazing systems for production and persistence from hill country native pastures are being evaluated.

The DPI EverGraze Extension Team including Kate Sargeant (Seymour), Alison Desmond (Rutherglen), Anita Morant (Hamilton), Raquel Waller (Geelong), Trevor Pollard (Kyneton) and Prue Bergmeier (Bairnsdale) will be coordinating the Road Shows.  EverGraze scientists and industry specialists including Meredith Mitchell (DPI Rutherglen), Jim Virgona (CSU Wagga Wagga), Julian Hill (University of Melbourne), Reg Hill (Wrightson Seeds - Ballarat) and the Hamilton EverGraze Research Team led by Ralph Behrendt (DPI Hamilton) will be presenting on the days.

Breeders for Profit ~ 2nd Day Work Shop

Dougal Purcell, Emma Weatherly and Alison Desmond from the Department of Primary Industries are running a Breeders for Profit workshop in the Eurao/Yea area this spring.

The aim of this workshop is to increase the profitability of commercial cattle breeding operations by improving the breeding herd and its management. All cattle producers are welcome.

Two seven hour sessions are delivered on farm with a number of real case study exercises using the host farm cattle and records. Practical application with group discussions, hands on exercises and guest producer presentations is a feature. During the workshop participants develop a breeding herd improvement plan for their own individual enterprise.

The Euroa/Yea workshop commences on Monday 18th August 2008, and the second day is on Tuesday 16th September 2008.

Feedback from previous participants has been very positive.  Robyn Hoggins, "Minjara" near Cowwar attended Breeders for Profit in Gippsland last year with her husband.  Her comments are “Excellent- worthwhile, relevant, and practical. Workbook full of great info.  Sessions make you think seriously about the way things are done and other options available!”

The workshop will be limited to approximately 20 producers.  Register early in order to be guaranteed a place.

For more information on the workshops please contact Alison Desmond on 02 60304613 or to register contact Jane Mercer at the RIST Centre on 03 5573 0943
